Things to consider before buying a hard drive for your Mac

Hard drives are the easiest and most affordable ways to store and backup all your necessary data safely. Though our Mac devices come with a good amount of storage space, backing up your important files on hard drives are always a good idea. So that during a computer crash or any mishaps, you will have a copy of your important data.

But finding the right hard drive for your Mac might be a difficult task. That’s why I decided to write a post about the essential things that you should consider before buying an external hard drive for MacBook devices. If you are a gamer, you can check the best ssd for gaming.

Storage device type

External Storage device comes in two different types – SSD and HDD. SSDs (Solid State Drives) are mighty devices that offer superfast writing and reading speed, more shock resistant, very lightweight devices. Also, SSDs are less to break than a standard portable hard drive. However, these are way costlier than HDD devices. On the other side, HDDs are comparatively much slower in speed but offer much extra capacity at a much cheaper price than SSDs.

If you are someone who wants to use the hard drive for data backup, then HDD might be the best option for you. But if you are looking for something robust, powerful, and something that could transfer your data within seconds, then definitely SSDs are the right choice for you.

Storage Size

One thing that most people overlook while buying a storage device is its storage capacity. I have seen a lot of people end up purchasing hard disks that are either very small according to their needs or very high in size. Simply evaluate your need for a hard drive.

If you are looking for a hard drive that could backup only your necessary data, then a 500 GB to 1 TB hard drive would be sufficient for you. But if you need a hard drive to carry media files, movies, games, and other stuff, then definitely you need a higher capacity hard drive. Always go for a hard drive with double capacity than your need.

Compatibility and Technology

External hard drives come with multiple connection options. If your Mac has a USB port, then you should go for USB 3.0 or above connection options. You can also go for Thunderbolt 3 or USB Type-C as they are the fastest port on Mac devices.

Also, you need to keep in mind that just because a hard drive working fine on your Mac doesn’t mean that it will work on any other Windows or Linux machine. The drive must be compatible with the different OS as well. So that if you wish to transfer files among other devices, you can do that easily.

While looking for the hard drive for your Mac, you might end up looking at multiple drives with the different configurations at the same price. At that point, you need to decide which drive configuration is fulfilling most of your needs. This way, you will end up buying a perfect hard drive for your Mac.
