Places to Find Essay Ideas

Essay Ideas

If you essay or are a freelance writer, you will need to come up with a steady stream of essay ideas.  Sometimes they seem to come naturally, while other times you might find yourself blocked.  That’s when it becomes important to have a list of places to find essay ideas.  Ideas are all around you!  You just need to find a plan to capture them and put them down on the page.

When I come up with the essaywriter ideas and don’t have time to write them immediately, I like to write them down in a notebook so that they are there when I need them.  This is a list of a few places that give me the most inspiration.

In Your Home

Look Around to Spot Ideas

Take a moment and glance around the room you are sitting in.  What do you see?  Sure, it might just be your living room, or office, or dining room, but what is in the room?  What items do you love and use regularly?  What secrets and tips do you have that you want to share with the reader?

From where I am sitting, I can see shelves of my favorite cookbooks, a calendar featuring images of the Oregon Coast, and a print of a painting.  The things that you feature in your home are often things that you love, so why not write about them?  Write about your favorite books, a recipe you made for dinner, great places to visit on the coast, how you organize your home, or what toys your pet loves.  Write about all the reasons you hate vertical blinds (or maybe it’s just me)!  Pick an object that you can see and go from there!

On Search Engines

You know how when you start typing something into Google, it gives you a drop-down box with a list of suggestions for topics?  These are all things that people are typing into Google and looking for online.  Why not write about one of them?

Start typing a topic you enjoy into Google and see what pops up!  You may get a list of good essay ideas to put together a series of pieces on the same topic.  I like to keep an eye on the suggestions when I am searching online for things.  Not only do I get ideas from things I look for daily, but I find extra essay ideas from Google itself.

During Keyword Research

There are many different tools available to help you do keyword research.  Many essay writers consider them as great places to find great ideas.  I like to keep it simple and use the Google Keyword Tool from Google Adwords.  You can enter a few keywords that you are targetting and it will give information on the number of searches and advertising competition for those keywords.  But, more importantly, it provides great lists of keywords that are related.

When I get stuck on essay ideas, I love entering a somewhat generic phrase and seeing what kinds of keywords pop up.  I try to start with a phrase that I already write about, so the essay ideas will tie into a niche I have already started.  Somewhere in the lists of keywords, a great idea might bloom.
Through Writing Prompts

Do a quick search for “writing prompts” and you will come up with literally thousands of websites featuring writing prompts for fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.  These short suggestions give writers a jumping-off place to start their daily writing.  They are meant to get the creative juices flowing so you can put together new ideas.

From Your Friends and Family

Talking to your friends, family, and coworkers can be a great place to find essay ideas.  Put all those conversations to good use to get your inspiration going.  Keep your ears open when you are chatting with the people in your life.  Their questions and concerns may be a great source of inspiration.  What do the people in your life want to learn about?  What do they want to read?  What would help them in their lives?  These are the ideas that make great essays.

You may even want to keep a notebook with you when you go out.  When you get an idea, you don’t want to lose it!
